Brief

Banking research in conversation

The International Banking Institute hosted its inaugural workshop on 13th and 14th May 2026 at Cloth Hall Court, University of Leeds, bringing together academics and policymakers from across Europe to present and discuss cutting-edge research in banking.

The workshop was opened by Professor Kevin Keasey, Director of the IBI, who welcomed delegates from institutions including the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, Norges Bank, the Bank of Spain, KU Leuven, and several leading universities across the UK and continental Europe.

Programme

Research themes across two days

Bank balance sheets and liquidity

Day one opened with a session chaired by Professor Danilo Mascia. Johannes Breckenfelder presented work on bank balance sheet constraints and mutual fund fragility, followed by Professor Barbara Casu on how liquidity requirements shape non-bank financing.

Credit shocks and bank resolution

A second session chaired by Dr Joshua Cave featured Jin Cao on how credit shocks propagate through banks, firms and households, and Professor Emanuela Giacomini on whether bank resolution reforms have reduced market perceptions of too-big-to-fail risk.

Mortgage markets and lending behaviour

Day two opened with Mauricio Salgado-Moreno presenting work on how monetary policy affects mortgage fixation periods, followed by a session chaired by Professor Valeriya Dinger on collateral, credit relationships and loan officer performance.

Loan supply, geopolitical risk and branch access

Later sessions featured Alejandro Casado on loan supply shocks, Alessio Reghezza on geopolitical risk and bank lending, Professor Claudia Girardone on spatial bank access, and Dr Joshua Cave on branch quality, monetary tightening and deposit stability.
